-Boom after first attempt using West System aluminum etching kit; surface is after Interlux primer
The first attempt at painting the boom didn't go so well, and I am kind of happy it turned out the way it did. The failed attempt gave me pause to step back and reassess the level of restoration I wanted to bring to the boom. There are fittings that are tired and worn out (gooseneck and outhaul fittings, as well as some cheek blocks and eye straps), so I will take the opportunity this time to fill a lot of the tapped screw and rivet holes with thickened epoxy in order to fair the surface and re-tap them for new fittings.
This time around, the process will be to sand the boom back down to bright aluminum (removing all scale and oxidization), prepare the tapped screw and rivet holes for epoxy filler, prime with Pettit two part metal primer, then prime with Pettit tie-coat primer, and finally topcoat with Pettit Easpoxy (gloss white).
Sanding should begin soon....
